The answer: have your hospital bag fully packed from week 35 of pregnancy, and divide everything into three bags — the mother’s main bag, the baby’s bag and the partner’s bag. With this checklist, you will not be frantically hunting for essentials at the last minute when contractions start.

The Mother’s Main Bag

  • Pink Book / antenatal records — essential!
  • Identity card and Guarantee Letter (GL).
  • Maternity sanitary pads.
  • Thick socks and a cardigan (hospital air conditioning is cold).
  • Nursing gowns with front buttons, or comfortable clothes to wear home.
  • Disposable maternity panties.

The Baby’s Bag

  • 4–5 sets of long-sleeved outfits, mittens and booties.
  • Newborn-sized disposable nappies.
  • Nappy rash cream, baby oil (minyak telon) and wet wipes.
  • Soft bath towels and swaddle cloths.

The Partner’s Bag

  • Phone, power bank and charger.
  • Simple snacks, bottled water and a light change of clothes.

Final Tips

  • Keep all three bags somewhere easy to reach at home.
  • Have your Guarantee Letter (GL) ready in advance so hospital admission runs smoothly — including choosing your option through the FPP scheme if giving birth at a government hospital.
  • Check the bags again every week after week 35 in case you need to add anything.
  • Know the real signs of labour — waters breaking, the show and regular contractions — so you know when to head to hospital.
  • Your Pink Book is the most important item in the mother’s bag — never leave home without it.
